The Top 3 Busting Fitness Myths

Fitness should be a very simple topic. However, there are so many opinions out there, that it can seem to be really complicated. The solution, for most people, is to shut it out completely and hope that it goes away. Do you really believe this is the best way? Why not just get the simple facts and straight talk?

I was in a meeting recently, when a real estate agent said, "You could talk about fitness to people, but then they may turn around and eat a bagel or something". That is a very interesting comment. First, it has nothing to do about fitness. Whether a person eats a bagel or not is totally irrelevant to fitness.

Fitness is about getting your body, mind and spirit to talk the same talk. There has to be a buy-in, at some level of your consciousness, to become a healthier person. It is that buy-in that makes people re-arrange their lifestyle to become a healthier person. Some people are committed to running at 4 AM to get in their workout before heading out to work. Obviously, this kind of activity takes serious commitment. Others get in a walk at lunch time. Some people choose to join a group activity to get their fitness into the day.

What is important to note is that people do make changes to their lifestyle reflecting the amount of their buy-in to become a healthier person. It isn't all torture. It is give and take. It really depends on what you want. Some people just want to get to a healthier body. This might mean that they should shed some extra weight. A certified personal trainer can advise on how you can do that in a safe manner. For some people, it might mean just trying to get more energy by including some flexibility in their life. This way they don't have to groan and moan when reaching for that top shelf in the kitchen.

Fitness is not one thing for everybody. It has to be assessed on a case by case basis. That is why there are so many personal trainers and that is also why their plates are full. I have yet to see a personal trainer whose agenda is not full with clients. People like the real estate agent might find this surprising. Here are the facts.

We should first admit that everyone wants to look good. A healthy ego is part and parcel of being human. Ripped abs like Shah Rukh Khan are the envy of most men. Most women wished they looked like Cher. However, eighty percent of the population is not interested in doing the work to become healthy. They realise that getting a fitter version of themselves is going to take commitment and a lot of work. Most people have gone too far in the unhealthy lifestyle direction that they know what it takes to get back on the tracks. They know it takes way more energy than they are willing to commit. There is no buy-in.

There is the twenty percent of the population that realizes the problem and are willing to do something to correct it. They are the ones that fill our schedule everyday. They make rapid strides and get to a new improved healthy version of themselves. It is fantastic to see the butterfly come out after the journey. It is one of the most beautiful parts of life to see this happen. It is like watching a sunrise or sunset. Our days are full with such beautiful people who have made the commitment.

There are simply not enough personal trainers to go around if the other eighty percent decided to with the program. It is too high a hill to climb and they are happy with their life the way it is. So leave them to enjoy that life. Why would there ever be a problem if they ate a bagel? They are the population who will choose to eat whatever they want, whenever they want to.

Therefore, unlike the real estate agent's comment, we would not be talking to such a person. Unless we are talking about the weather or the opera or something not fitness related. In that case, we would not care if they ate a bagel or not. Suppose they are hungry. It is good that they go and eat a bagel.

In fact, after my last run, I was interested in a whole wheat bagel. It is not the eating of the bagel that is right or wrong. It is the fact that the body, mind and spirit have to buy in to a fitness attitude and live the life in accordance with that.

The first myth is that fitness professionals will always be talking to people about fitness. Nothing could be further from the truth. We get paid to talk about fitness. So no one would be standing on a street corner doling out information to uninterested passers by.

The second myth is that it would somehow be wrong to eat a bagel. As explained in the details in this article, it is neither wrong nor right in and of itself. Instead, it really depends on the person whose fitness might be affected by eating a bagel. The circumstances are far more important.

The third myth is that everybody should buy in to the fitness mindset. That is not going to happen. This is similar to thinking that everyone is going to have a billionaire mindset like Donald Trump. Does everyone want to be rich? Yes. Is everyone going to do the work to get there? Probably not. The portion of the population that does the work is the portion that has the mindset to do the work to get there. The others just keep on wishing.
