Injectables: How Safe Are They?

The safest injectable is your own body fat. Since there is virtually no risk of rejection or allergy, this would be the first choice for your anti-aging treatment.

Since scientists have discovered that collagen is responsible for the elasticity of the skin, and people lose collagen the older they get, surgeons and dermatologists realized that they can inject bovine (cow) fat into wrinkles and folds, or use artificial means that will emulate the same protein found in human skin.

The most popular injectable is Botulinum Toxin Type A, or Botox. It is helpful in treating wrinkles caused from squinting or frowning that cause muscle contraction. Botox paralyzes the muscles responsible for those wrinkles thus reducing their appearance. This type of procedure is not effective on any wrinkles that are not caused by muscle contraction. Wrinkles caused by too much sun, cigarette smoking, and aging are best relieved by dermal fillers.

There are many different kinds of injectable dermal fillers. The most popular is Restylane, made in Sweden. It's a hyaluronic acid type of dermal filler, which will last a lot longer than collagen when it's infused into the folds around your mouth. Hyaluronic acid is natural and works to increase the volume by holding moisture in the skin.

Juvederm is a new product included in the hyaluronic acid category that has the largest concentration of the acid. It carries a unique formulation that makes it a smooth gel rather than a particle suspension, which gives you less discomfort and a more favorable outcome. This cosmetic injectable is the favorite and most preferred by surgeons.

Radiesse is another newer tissue filler options on the market. If you are bothered by jowling or creases at the sides of your nose going down to the corners of the mouth, this is the safest product on the market. Radiesse, made of natural material obtained from the human body (calcium), will deliver long-lasting results.

Two more hyaluronic acid injectables have been FDA approved. Hyalform that is manufactured from rooster combs last about three months. Captique is non-animal based and it's reported as an injectable that causes less bruising and swelling than Restylane.

As always, talk to a trusted, board certified cosmetic surgeon about which of these methods are best and safest for you.
