While cortisol is an essential part of a person's response to stress, it's critical that a person's "relaxation response" kick in so the body's functions return to normal as quickly as possible following a stressful situation. When a stressful event hits, try some of these techniques to help your body's response to stress:

And while it is easy to say just avoid all stress, if your life is anything like mine, you're talking the impossible. But you should really try to recognize your various stress levels and potentially stressful events or situations. During times of increased stress, cleanse very thoroughly, and it's a good idea to try to add an additional cleanse to your daily regimen, possibly adding a cleanse midday in addition to your morning and evening cleanse. If you use topical products, increase your applications from once daily, if possible, to twice. In other words, you need to step up your daily skin care procedure, whatever that may be, to counteract the skin's response to stress. When the stressful situation passes, you can return to the normal daily skin-care regimen.
Some research suggests that coffee, with or without caffeine, stimulates the production of cortisol and mimics stress. Coffee may be a promoter of acne and its use should be limited. Actually, green tea is a healthier alternative selection. But if you're a coffee drinker, when stress levels rise, it's probably a good idea to at least reduce your coffee consumption even if you're not able to completely eliminate it.
It's important to keep in mind that in addition to the connection between acne and stress, the effects of stress can be a contributor to fatigue, aches and pains, headaches, anxiety disorders, depression, and difficulty sleeping. It can also cause disorders such as ulcers, abdominal cramps, colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome. People under the effects of stress may have more colds and infections.
The bottom line -- if you want acne free skin, in addition to your daily skin-care regimen, keeping stress at bay is extremely important.
