Sixty is said to be the new forty. I personally find it more and more difficult to determine people's ages as I age. People are looking younger and younger. Or am I getting older and older?
There are many new discoveries today to look younger, feel good and have a steady stream of energy. I am extremely energetic, however after a very long hike I have been known to steal a quick ten minute power nap. It is a treat I allow myself, being basically retired. I actually do work; I am writing all the time, but I am at home, and I can work when I want. What a great life!
The one thing people fear most about aging is the possible loss of their memory and cognitive ability. There are many ways to insure brain health as we age. And since people are living longer today they are faced with these possibilities. There are three categories each providing support to brain health:
1. Food and supplements
2. Brain usage (puzzles, games, learning new things)
3. daily exercise
There are no guarantees in life, however if we do all we can to stay healthy, the percentages of having a fit brain go up substantially.
Some of the foods and supplements that are reported to enhance our brains are as follows:
1. Fresh fish
2. blueberries
3. broccoli
4. grapes
5. curry powder, turmeric, oregano
6. Vitamins B6 & 12
7. grapeseed extract
8. gingko
These are just a few, and should be eaten or taken at least three times a week.
Brain usage is a major factor. There are many brain games such as Sudoku, and word puzzles to keep one's brain active everyday. Learn activities like a musical instrument, new dance steps, fun new games and my all time favorite, the computer.
Exercise is said to be one of the most important things we do, and we all should indulge on a daily basis. Along with heart health benefits, mood enhancement, the cognition of the brain can be greatly boosted. Walking just thirty minutes per day will do the trick.
Aging is inevitable but getting old does not have to be. It is important to have fun things to look forward to, interesting friends, activities that are stimulating. It is good for the heart and soul to give of yourself and your time to those who could use some help.
When you wake up in the morning you have choices for the day. Do you want to enjoy your day or do you want to wallow in your problems? We all have problems and challenges, especially in today's economic downturn. Needless to say most of us are all worried about the future. You cannot put your head in the sand and hide, but you can divert yourself by doing something special for yourself!
