The Ability to Give Life

As the title suggests, the term above means the ability to give life. At the onset of the term it was mostly applied to women but over the years it has been applied to men more often. The term is now applied to both sexes on a universal basis for the understanding of the reproductive process and how it can work either successfully or unsuccessfully.

Fertility is an exciting term for couples to hear when they are in the process of trying to conceive a child. For a human being to be fertile they must concentrate on different factors in their life. Those factors are nutrition, economics, way of life, timing, emotions, instinct, sexual behavior and even culture.

There are three different statistical factors that come into play for both men and women when discussing fertility.

Women:

1. 75 percent of women at age 30 will conceive within one year and 91 percent of women will conceive within four years.
2. 66 percent of women at age 35 will conceive within one year and 84 percent of women will conceive within four years.
3. 44 percent of women at age 40 will conceive within one year and 64 percent of women will conceive within four years.

Men:

1. In men between the ages of 20-39 years old, 90 percent of the seminiferous tubes contain mature sperm.
2. In men between the ages of 40-69 years old, 50 percent of the seminiferous tubes contain mature sperm.
3. In men 80 years or older, 10 percent of the seminiferous tubes contain mature sperm.

Fertility for both men and women is an important factor in planning a family and can be difficult if the ages are widely varying.
