Razor Bump and Burn Treatment

Improper shaving can cause ingrown hairs which leads to razor bumps. Your skin becomes inflamed because hair protruding into the skin is thought of as a 'foreign body' by your immune system. To counter against it, the accumulation of dead cells in the area occurs.

As shaved hair starts to re-grow, some of the hair strands fail to grow cleanly out of the follicle opening, but instead, curl inwards. This causes the jagged tips to pierce the skin causing redness and inflammation. This results in a razor bump, a tender bump on the skin surface. These bumps may look like pimples or cysts. Skin inflammation can cause permanent scarring, as well as, color changes to the skin.

Preventing razor bumps

  • Take a hot shower before shaving to make the hair soft and skin tender.
  • Use shaving cream or gel to lubricate and soften the skin.
  • Use a sharp blade but not double or triple blades.
  • Don't shave against the grain of hair growth. This causes more irritation.
  • Don't place too much pressure on the skin while shaving.
  • Don't shave over an area more than twice and use short strokes.
  • Don't use depilatory products: While they may provide relief, it can be extremely harsh and drying on the skin.

Electric shavers may relieve initial irritation by preventing a close shave. However, these razors do not prevent hairs from turning back into the skin, causing razor burn.

Use a post shave treatment. An aftershave treatment gets rid of razor bumps and prevent new one from occurring. Ingredients present in an effective post shave treatment will not cause the skin to become dry. It heals nicks and cuts and prevents razor bump infection. Post shave treatments also prevent discoloration and itching resulting from hair removal.

To prevent razor bump irritation, consider changing the way you shave and use a post shave treatment.
